Ingredients
- 1 cup yellow lentils (toor dal)
- 3 cups water
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 2 dried red chilies
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Rinse the lentils under cold water until the water runs clear.
- Boil the lentils with 3 cups of water, turmeric, and salt in a pot. Simmer for 20-25 minutes until the lentils are soft.
- Heat ghee or oil in a pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and dried red chilies. Sauté until the seeds start to crackle.
- Add the chopped onion, garlic, and ginger. Cook until the onion is golden brown.
- Stir in the chopped tomato and cook until it softens.
- Mix in the garam masala and cook for another minute.
- Combine the cooked lentils with the spice mixture. Stir well and simmer for 5 more minutes.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
Additional Notes
For a vegan version, use oil instead of ghee. You can also add a squeeze of lemon juice for extra tanginess. Serve with rice or naan for a complete meal.
