Preparation and Cooking Time

Preparation Time: 30 minutes

Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Total Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cashews, soaked in water for 2 hours and drained
  • 200g smoked tofu, crumbled
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 24 gyoza wrappers
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/4 cup water, for steaming
  • Optional: soy sauce or dipping sauce of choice, for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling by combining the soaked cashews, crumbled smoked tofu, soy sauce, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and green onions in a food processor. Pulse until the mixture is well combined but still slightly chunky.
  2. Assemble the gyoza by placing a teaspoon of filling in the center of each gyoza wrapper. Moisten the edges with water, fold the wrapper in half, and press to seal, pleating the edges if desired.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the gyoza in a single layer, flat side down, and cook for 2-3 minutes until the bottoms are golden brown.
  4. Pour in the water, cover the skillet with a lid, and steam the gyoza for 5 minutes or until the water has evaporated and the wrappers are tender.
  5. Remove the lid and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes to re-crisp the bottoms.
  6. Serve the gyoza hot with soy sauce or your favorite dipping sauce.

Additional Notes

For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free gyoza wrappers. You can also add finely chopped vegetables like cabbage or carrots to the filling for extra texture and flavor.
