Houmous is a creamy, savory dip that originates from the Middle East. Ingredients
- 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, drained and rinsed
- 1/4 cup tahini
- 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (about 1 large lemon)
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for serving
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- Salt to taste
- 2-3 tablespoons water, as needed
- Pinch of paprika, for garnish
Instructions
- Prepare the chickpeas by draining and rinsing them under cold water.
- Combine the tahini and lemon juice in a food processor. Process for 1 minute until smooth and creamy.
- Add the minced garlic, olive oil, cumin, and a pinch of salt to the tahini mixture. Process for another 30 seconds.
- Incorporate the chickpeas into the processor. Process for 1-2 minutes, until thick and smooth. Scrape down the sides as needed.
- Adjust the consistency by adding 2-3 tablespoons of water, processing until the desired texture is reached.
- Season with additional salt to taste, and process briefly to combine.
- Transfer the houmous to a serving bowl. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with paprika before serving.
Additional Notes
For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper. You can also substitute lime juice for lemon juice for a different citrus flavor. If you prefer a smoother houmous, peel the chickpeas before processing.
