Ingredients
- 1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed
- 1 1/2 pounds shallots, peeled and halved
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- Fresh thyme leaves, for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Melt the butter with olive oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium heat.
- Add the shallots to the skillet, cut side down, and cook for about 10 minutes until they start to caramelize.
- Sprinkle the brown sugar over the shallots, then pour in the balsamic vinegar. Season with salt and pepper.
- Cook for another 5 minutes, allowing the sugar to dissolve and the vinegar to reduce slightly.
- Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface to fit the size of your skillet.
- Place the pastry over the shallots, tucking the edges into the skillet.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and puffed.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes.
- Invert the tarte tatin onto a serving plate, so the shallots are on top.
- Garnish with fresh thyme leaves before serving.
Additional Notes
For a variation, try adding a sprinkle of goat cheese or feta before serving for a creamy contrast. You can also substitute shallots with red onions for a slightly different flavor profile.
